Winter can be tough on horses—and we’re not done with it yet. The days are finally getting longer, but cold weather is still abound. Here are a few simple tips and routines you can use to keep your horse in top shape as spring approaches. Here’s how to prioritize wellness and set your horse up for a strong finish to the season:
- Keep Movement Consistent
Stabled horses need exercise to stay limber and avoid stiffness. Even if it’s too icy for a full ride, try hand-walking them around the barn or in a covered arena for 20-30 minutes daily. It boosts circulation and keeps their spirits up—less boredom means less stress. - Hydration Matters More Than Ever
Cold water can discourage drinking, and dehydration sneaks up fast in winter and we all know that leads to problems. Warm up their water buckets to around 50-60°F if possible, or add a splash of apple juice to entice them. We’re working on an All Natural Supplement to help with this and it’s planned release is this summer. A hydrated horse digests hay better and reduces colic risks. - Blanket Smart, Not Blind
A cozy blanket keeps your horses warm, but if you choose to blanket, check it daily for dampness or rubbing. Horses with good winter coats might not need heavy layers—overheating can stress their system. Feel under the blanket: if they’re sweaty, lighten up. Wellness starts with comfort. - Watch Their Mood
Horses can get the winter blues too. Spend extra time grooming or just hanging out with them. Toss in a stall toy or a salt lick to keep their mind engaged. A happy horse is a healthy horse, and those little interactions go a long way.
Focusing on these habits now builds a foundation for a vibrant spring. Your horse will thank you with every confident step they take. What wellness tricks work for your herd? Share your go-tos—we’re all ears!
